Feather Your Nest: European Bee-Eater

The European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) – also known as Eurasian or Golden Bee-eaters – are widely distributed, multi-colored bee-eaters with abundant populations in arid (dry) and semi-arid areas of southern Europe, northern Africa and western Asia.

This insectivorous species has recently been observed breeding in central Europe as far north as Sweden.

These bee-eaters tend to be shy and generally avoid humans. However, after rain in particular, they may be found close to human settlements in their search for beehives.

Let’s face it, I am a color girl. While I can certainly find beauty in monochromatic and neutral interiors, I also think that sometimes people are deep down craving color and play it too safe. I was first attracted to the European Bee-eater due to its vibrant colors, but I also love that its coloring does not represent any sort of trendy looking color scheme. In my opinion, using these colors as a palette would be unique and timeless.

Looking deeper I am amazed at the complexity of nature. This beautiful bird eats bees. This is just one creature in the circle of life doing its part.

  1. I love how well this rug establishes the color scheme. Plus, this is a high quality hand-knotted rug that is sure to be passed down from generation to generation.
  2. The unique lamp shade pulls the same color palette in a different pattern to add some additional drama.
  3. I love figurative art, and this particular piece has an ethereal quality to it.
  4. I chose this particular coffee table because I love how the edge detail plays off of the pattern in the lamp shade.
  5. I tend to prefer clean-lined upholstered goods. This simple sofa allows the coffee table to be the piece that really stands out as something special.
  6. I love that this mirror adds some drama, plays off the pattern in the rug and is even reminiscent of the shape of the bee-eater’s beak.
