Tamales for Christmas in Austin go together like bread and butter. If you are new to Austin and have not participated in this age old tradition, and if you’re not adventurous enough to have your own tamale making party, then try ordering ahead of time
from one of these great options for your party or to start a great Christmas Eve tradition:
Stiles Switch BBQ: Have you ever had a brisket tamale. If not, try them here for a truly authentic Austin, Texas tamale.
Tamale House East: The word tamale is in the name and the rating over five stars. Need I say more?
Tamale Addiction: If you’d like to have a beautiful little drive on the way to get your tamales, check out this spot in Manor, TX.
My family has never eaten out on Christmas day. I can see the appeal though with all of the stress and hustle & bustle that go into the holidays. We have found ourselves eating out a couple of Thanksgivings and have enjoyed it as a slightly different adventure.
I tend to think that both Thanksgiving and Christmas are better spent at home with friends or family, but there are some times when this just isn’t possible, or in cases where you are a transplant here in Austin and your family is not close enough to visit every year, go ahead and give yourself the gift of a nice meal out and a day without doing dishes. Here are a couple of nice picks:
Driskill Grill: If you have lived in Austin for any length of time, you know the historic Driskill Hotel that sits just off of Congress Ave. downtown. Just around back you’ll find the Driskill Grill and Bar, with locally sourced game and ingredients, and has an extensive wine glass.
